Tavira & surroundings
Nestled in the eastern part of the Algarve, Tavira is one of Portugal’s most charming and authentic towns. Known for it’s elegant architecture, peaceful atmosphere, and rich history, Tavira offers a slower, more traditional Algarve experience while still providing beautiful beaches, excellent food, and warm hospitality.
The town is divided by the Gilão River and connected by a picturesque Roman bridge. As you wander through Tavira’s cobbled streets, you’ll discover whitewashed houses, beautiful churches, traditional tiled façades and hidden courtyards. With over 20 churches, a historic castle offering panoramic views, and fascinating museums, Tavira reflects centuries of Roman, Moorish, and Portuguese influence.
Just offshore lies Ilha de Tavira, a barrier island with long stretches of golden sand and many beach restaurants. Easily reached by ferry or water taxi from the centre of Tavira (keep a look out for flamingo’s in the salt pans) or at Quatro Águas harbour, closer to the island. There you will also find D’Gusta tapas restaurant, you won’t be dissapointed (keep room for desert!)
The region is also ideal for nature lovers, with the UNESCO protected Ria Formosa Natural Park providing opportunities for birdwatching, cycling and boat tours. Tavira’s culinary scene highlights fresh seafood, local wines, and traditional Algarve flavors, making every meal a party. In your accommodation you will find a map with our recommendations 🙂
Whether you’re seeking culture, relaxation, nature or authentic Portuguese life, Tavira invites you to return again and again.
